Roosevelt Family Reading Night!

This year, my involvement with the Roosevelt PTA led me to take on the role of Reading Coordinator which entails organizing "Family Reading Night" the largest Roosevelt activity of the year. I decided on the theme of "Bedtime Stories" and kids were really excited about wearing their pajamas to school.

It was such a fun night, dinner was catered by Roosevelt Market; Miss Tammi, from the Boise Public Library came to tell stories for the younger kids; Ben Kemper, a world ranked storyteller, came for the older kids; there were bookmark making stations; and kids got to share their "Young Author" books with their parents.

One of the things I am most proud of concerning the night was the "Young Author" program. I worked with all the teachers for a couple of months implementing the program and I was really happy with the results. I really wanted every child to go home that night with a book-and not just any book a book they had written themselves. Some of the teachers were a little hesitant at first, but were really pleased with how well received the books were by their students and the parents.

Mr. Socia, a fifth grade teacher, before the night began, explained that his students couldn't wait to show their parents what they had been working on and that one of his students had written over 1,500 words and couldn't talk about her book without crying!
Here is Miss Tammi, captivating kids with her storytelling ability.
Ben Kemper was erratic, theatric, and completely perfect for the night with his campfire storytelling.

Scott made me promise that while I am Primary President I wouldn't organize any more big activities--but after this year I really wanted to continue the Young Author program and I, in a complete moment of udder craziness, agreed to be in charge of Family Reading Night for next year. The wheels are already turning.
