Where the heck is Shoup?

“Each one of us here today will at one time in our lives look upon a loved one who is in need and ask the same question: We are willing to help, Lord, but what, if anything, is needed? For it is true we can seldom help those closest to us. Either we don't know what part of ourselves to give or, more often than not, the part we have to give is not wanted. And so it is those we live with and should know who elude us. But we can still love them - we can love completely without complete understanding.” -Norm Maclean, As A River Runs Through It and Other Stories

Over the Fourth of July my family set out to deliver my brother's ashes to their final resting place in the Salmon River.  We traveled to Shoup, Id, population 12, and then an hour further to where the road ends and the Salmon River enters Hell's Canyon.  This is where my brother found peace fishing and rafting while alive and this is where we decided to spread his ashes leaving them to travel the river one last time.

We saw a black bear and its cub, a mountain goat, elk and deer while there and I am so grateful we were able to share something Lance loved with our children.

We stopped in Salmon on our way to Challis and went to the Sacajawea museum.  Grandma, of course. couldn't resist buying the girls these cut Indian dolls.

Lilly thought the tepees were cool.

On our way back to Boise we stopped at Red Fish Lake for the day.

The water was freezing but that didn't stop our girls from getting in.  We rented a paddle boat and rode out to the middle.  Scott would pick up the girls and throw them in.  I got in once and couldn't believe how cold it was.

Lilly having a little siesta.
